Vitamunch® has been created using top quality ingredients from experts in their fields. The Timothy grass used in vitamunch® is sourced from award winning specialist grower, Newhay Feeds in Yorkshire, who are as passionate about animal welfare as we are.

Newhay Feeds

Award-winning Newhay Feeds was originally set up in 2004 as a family-business, owned and managed by husband and wife team, Ian and Helen Burrows, to manufacture feeds based on crops grown on their 350 acre farm near Selby in North Yorkshire.

Ian's interest in forage began when he was asked to supply a local trainer with haylage of a consistent quality to feed his race horses. Ian researched the market and recognised a gap for high quality hay-based feeds.

Since then, Newhay has specialised in growing and drying Timothy, a high quality grass, leafy, palatable and acknowledged as a classic forage for horses and small herbivores such as rabbits and guinea pigs.

Recently Ian Burrows won the national "Diversification Farmer of The Year" Award from the Farmer's Weekly Publication - the Oscars of the farming world.

Equilibrium Products are proud to have teamed up with Newhay to create vitamunch®. We recognise their innovative approach to producing quality grass fibre products, and the benefits to horse and pet welfare that this brings.

The Newhay approach

The team at Newhay have set out to make the best characteristics of hay better and reduce or eliminate its worst characteristics.

We all recognise the best characteristics of hay are its nose or aroma, its palatability, its low moisture content, its low energy and protein contents, and portion control. Also a bright, light green appearance is important because it is a sign that a hay has been mown, dried and baled quickly.

The core of the Newhay operation is focused on delivering each positive and achieving low dust high quality hay -

Grass variety - Timothy is acknowledged as the classic horse forage - palatable yet low in energy, protein and unwanted soluble carbohydrates. Newhay focus on growing varieties of Timothy that are suitable for use by horses.

Cutting date - when the Timothy grass has grown to its full height and the energy, protein and soluble carbohydrate levels are measured to be low, and the grass is ready for cutting and baling. Each field is carefully monitored to determine the best time to cut and bale.

Drying process - Grass is mown, baled and dried within 48 hours to ensure freshness. The consistent moisture of the bales after drying means there is no scope for mould development in store. The colour and taste of Newhay Timothy is preserved by extracting the excess moisture at low temperatures in their specialist drier.

Together these ensure that each mouthful of Newhay Timothy is high on taste, low in dust, and fibre rich - the perfect start to a horse's diet.

Quality

Newhay spend a lot of time choosing what to sow and how to grow to create the very best conditions to make sure their grass is top quality, tasty and nutritious.

Every part of their growing, baling, drying and storage is monitored for quality, from the way the fields are mown to the finished moisture content of the dried bales.

Each of their 9 fields of grass at their farm in North Yorkshire can be easily identify to see exactly where the Timothy grass used in vitamunch® comes from.
